ACTUAL FINISHED WORK AH Assignment for Survey of Illustration class- do a piece based on three artists who inspire you. My artists were Al Columbia, Phil Hale and Sean Gordon Murphy, who have all done comic books and comic book covers so I decided to do a cover for that horror comic I did a while back ([link]). I’ve been quietly piecing together the story for it, maybe I can actually get a start on it this summer. |

Hi anon! I do get burnt out sometimes- usually in the form of “wow all of these ideas are really awful”. The best way I’ve found to get past this is just to keep pushing through it, even if it’s difficult. I feel one of the best skills someone working in communication arts can have is to be able to continue to put out work, despite art block or not being inspired. In the Real World, those excuses aren’t going to fly when you miss your deadline. Doing art for a living (or a grade) can be incredibly fulfilling and fun, but sometimes it’s just work and you gotta deal with it. Something I’ve found that really helps though, is having someone to bounce ideas off of, whether it’s a good friend or your professor. As for motivation, I am extremely obsessed with improving my work and unfortunately I get pretty self critical about it (orz)! Another factor I try to keep in mind is that every school assignment could possibly go into my future portfolio when I get out of school, so I try to make every piece better than the one before it. “I’m going to have to make a living on this someday, it’s gotta be the best, I can’t stop (ahhh!)”, is my usual mindset aha Always strive to improve your work and learn something new in every drawing you do and don’t be down on yourself if you’re not doing as well as you want to. Use that feeling as motivation to make your art even better and be proud of your strengths! You’ll get there! |
